Plate Smashing at The Stage Door Steakhouse

Plate Smashing at The Stage Door Steakhouse

The saying goes that ‘When you go Greek, you’ve reached your peak.’ Well that is definitely true when it comes to Greek food.

Wait, what were you thinking about?!

The ONLY Greek restaurant in Wimbledon, The Stage Door Steakhouse mixes moussaka with sirloin (not literally) to bring customers the finest steak and Mediterranean cuisine around.

Established since 1982, the restaurant has been a firm fixture of Wimbledon Broadway for over 30 years serving up steaks and home-made Greek dishes.

And yes I am related to the owners. This is indeed my in-laws’ family restaurant. And this is my completely unbiased review.

Now in his seventies but with the spirit of a twenty year old, my father-in-law set up the restaurant back in the day when dining out was about more than just the food. Plate-smashing and Greek belly dancers were a regular Friday night delight and hungry pelátis came from all over London to enjoy the delicious dishes and entertainment on offer.

Despite input from other family members, the driving force behind the restaurant is solely my father-in-law. From working in kitchens at the age of 15, the patriarch of the family still prefers to hand-pick his own stock and travels to Billingsgate and Smithfield markets at 1am every Sunday to select the best produce.

And I have yet to taste a better steak. Whether you choose sirloin, fillet or the giant T-bone I can guarantee that you will not have had a more succulent, juicy bit of beef ever before.

And there is also something for the veggies. From the vegetarian moussaka to the Greek salad, the home-made houmous (or hummus) to the fried calamari, the menu caters for everyone’s needs and as with all things Greek, the portions are very generous. None of that three chips served on a lettuce leaf rubbish.

Situated opposite the New Wimbledon Theatre, hence the name ‘The Stage Door’, the restaurant is the perfect spot for a bit of pre-theatre lunch/dinner or post-theatre drinks.

And you will be in great company. Sean Connery and Andre Agassi have both downed a few ouzo’s with my father-in-law, alongside The Hoff and Warwick Davis (on different occasions of course).

If you are looking for traditional Greek-Cypriot food or you just want a good old-fashioned steak and chips, The Stage Door won’t disappoint. So head to Wimbledon Broadway tonight and get your opa on!

The Stage Door is open on Christmas Day so book now!

Here in the very sunny lovely Florida USA my Uncle and Father both owned Restaurants, when I was the tender age of twelve I began working with my Father peeling 50 pound sacks of potatoes! Not all glory however I worked my way up to various positions, was recruited to also work with my Uncle (Dad’s brother) across town in his Restaurant. After 22 and 25 years they both sold out their Restaurants and had other business ventures to keep them busy-and yes they were both extremely successful and worked long, long hours. Put all of their children through college and now have a relaxing life (still young) to enjoy their grandchildren. I am proud of them! Cheryl
