Welcome to October’s Book Club! I personally find book recommendation blog posts really useful when I can’t be bothered to research new books so I thought that I would do a quick round-up of some of the material I have read / I am hoping to read this month that falls into the ‘spooky/spiritual’ category suited to this time of the year.
‘Books are dangerous things in Collins’s alternate universe, a place vaguely reminiscent of 19th-century England. It’s a world in which people visit book binders to rid themselves of painful or treacherous memories. Once their stories have been told and are bound between the pages of a book, the slate is wiped clean and their memories lose the power to hurt or haunt them.
After having suffered some sort of mental collapse and no longer able to keep up with his farm chores, Emmett Farmer is sent to the workshop of one such binder to live and work as her apprentice. Leaving behind home and family, Emmett slowly regains his health while learning the binding trade. He is forbidden to enter the locked room where books are stored, so he spends many months marbling end pages, tooling leather book covers, and gilding edges. But his curiosity is piqued by the people who come and go from the inner sanctum, and the arrival of the lordly Lucian Darnay, with whom he senses a connection, changes everything.’
This book was unlike anything I’ve ever read before yet at times I found the pace a little slow. Don’t be put off though, this is truly a unique read combining romance, mystery and a smidge of witchcraft.
‘A modern mystic’s practical guide to life, love and creating a fulfilling existence, from turning your home into a sacred sanctuary and manifesting magical relationships to loving your career and money magic.
Full of inspiration, practical advice and rituals, this book will guide you through the process of tapping into your intuition, intention and self-empowerment to discover and harness the magic within you.’
The perfect guide to witchy stuff for beginners, this book also contains information for empowerment: standing up for yourself, saying no, getting rid of negativity and so on.
A lovely bedside book for some magical self-care.
‘Your fate isn’t written in the stars, it’s in your cosmic code…

This book is AMAZING. I worked out all my cosmic codes and the character references were SO TRUE. I then worked out the codes for my family and friends and everyone was amazed by the accuracy of the readings. If you like astrology, numbers and character traits, this book is for you.
‘Young Fleetwood Shuttleworth, a noblewoman, is with child again. None of her previous pregnancies have borne fruit, and her husband, Richard, is anxious for an heir. Then Fleetwood discovers a hidden doctor’s letter that carries a dire prediction: she will not survive another birth. By chance she meets a midwife named Alice Grey, who promises to help her deliver a healthy baby. But Alice soon stands accused of witchcraft.
Is there more to Alice than meets the eye? Fleetwood must risk everything to prove her innocence. As the two women’s lives become intertwined, the Witch Trials of 1612 loom. Time is running out; both their lives are at stake. Only they know the truth. Only they can save each other.’
Based on the real Pendle Hill Witch Trials in the 17th century, this book had me gripped from the start. I’d love to see this turned into a film as it was so atmospheric. A great read.
‘Jason is a deliverance minister, and this is a story of oppression and possession, of ghosts, poltergeists and other paranormal phenomena, and how to deal with them. He is the first Anglican deliverance minister to write a book about this ministry for the general reader. A warm, sympathetic and humorous character who sees it as his mission to serve the community and help families in distress, each true-life adventure is like a detective story. At times, it’s a case of mental illness. At others, an energy or memory that has latched itself onto a place or property. At others, he’s even encountered fraud!
Welcome to his world.’
As seen on THIS MORNING, this non-fiction book details everyday investigations into poltergeists, ghosts and other supernatural phenomena by an Anglican priest. I read an excerpt in a newspaper and it sent shivers down my spine.
‘“All were about to fall from the den of the hyena, For the Order had not foreseen the strength of little Seraphina.” Born into a world ravaged by the fires of war and hate, little Seraphina is forced into hiding after her mother and father are brutally murdered by the Order. Led by the despotic Fanatic and his army of metallic pawns, the Order seeks to crush all who defy their tyrannical regime and slaughter those who stand in their way.
But amidst the bloodshed, a secret Alliance forms who dare to challenge the Fanatic’s reign. As Seraphina grows into a fierce and respected young woman, she gains the adoration of those who fought by her parents’ side and becomes a beacon of hope for the land’s tormented souls. With Fear and Death lurking in the shadows, Seraphina must find the courage to avenge her loved ones and free the people from the chains of eternal darkness.’
I couldn’t have a reading list without plugging one of my own books, so here is my short story in verse Seraphina. It’s a short medieval fantasy story written entirely in verse. I’ve always had a thing for rhyming couplets, especially ones shrouded in darkness. Hope you enjoy.
