With the cold nights drawing in, it is important to keep those nasty bugs at bay, and what better way to do so than with a herbal tea made by Yiayia.
Greek Mountain Tea is made from plants that grow wild on the Island of Crete. It is also known as Tsai Tou Vouno and is made using the dried leaves and flowers of Sideritis plants (ironwort). The tea is believed to have many health benefits and research has indicated that its anti-oxidant properties can aid the prevention of osteoporosis and cancer.
Ingredients:
½ ounce of the dried plant
1 quarter of boiling water
What to do:
- Pour boiling water over the tea and let it steep for about 5-7 minutes.
- Strain the tea and drink with honey, sugar or plain.
Add a slice of lemon and serve at breakfast or before bedtime with bread, olives, cake, fruit, (basically any food produce).
Yiayia’s rule: One mountain tea a day keeps sickness at bay.
Omg, I am listening to your Greek music list, LOVE IT!!! I wanted to put a Greek music list on my page, but wasn’t sure. Now I want too. 🙂 🙂

should we not boil the dried plant in the water? i’ve always been told that bringing the herb to an actually boil is what brings out the goodness.

I’m sure you can – I suppose each Yiayia has her own way of doing it!
