Greek Mythology Books for Summer Reading

Greek Mythology Books for Summer Reading

After catching up with a few thrillers that have been languishing on my kindle for a while, I’ve decided to return to my roots and dive back into Greek mythology this summer. The Greek myths continue to fascinate me and I always love to read a fresh take on old stories. So here is my list.

Happy reading everyone!

PSYCHE AND EROS

Born into an era of heroes, a prophecy claims that Psyche – Princess of Mycenae – will defeat a monster feared even by the gods themselves. Rebelling against society’s traditions, she spends her youth mastering blade and bow, preparing to fulfil her destiny.

But she is soon caught up in powers beyond her control, when the jealous Aphrodite sends the God of Desire, Eros, to deliver a fatal love-curse. The last thing Eros wants is to become involved in the chaos of the mortal world, but when he is pricked by the very arrow intended for Psyche, he is doomed to love a woman who will be torn from him the moment their eyes meet.

Thrown together by fate, headstrong Psyche and world-weary Eros will face challenges greater than they could have ever imagined. And as the Trojan War begins and the whole of the heavens try to keep them apart, will they find their way back to each other before it’s too late?

ORPHIA AND EURYDICIUS

Orphia dreams of something more than the warrior crafts she’s been forced to learn. Hidden away on a far-flung island, her blood sings with poetry and her words can move flowers to bloom and forests to grow … but her father, the sun god Apollo, has forbidden her this art.

A chance meeting with a young shield-maker, Eurydicius, gives her the courage to use her voice. After wielding all her gifts to defeat one final champion, Orphia draws the scrutiny of the gods. Performing her poetry, she wins the protection of the goddesses of the arts: the powerful Muses, who welcome her to their sanctuary on Mount Parnassus. Orphia learns to hone her talents, crafting words of magic infused with history, love and tragedy.

When Eurydicius joins her, Orphia struggles with her desire for fame and her budding love. As her bond with the gentle shield-maker grows, she joins the Argonauts on their quest for the Golden Fleece. Facing dragons, sirens and ruthless warriors on the voyage, Orphia earns unparalleled fame, but she longs to return to Eurydicius.

Yet she has a darker journey to make – one which will see her fight for her love with all the power of her poetry.

MEDUSA

Monster. Man-hater. Murderess.

Forget everything you’ve been told about Medusa.

Internationally bestselling author Jessie Burton flips the script in this astonishing retelling of Greek myth, illuminating the woman behind the legend at last.

Exiled to a far-flung island after being abused by powerful Gods, Medusa has little company other than the snakes that adorn her head instead of hair.

Haunted by the memories of a life before everything was stolen from her, she has no choice but to make peace with her present: Medusa the Monster.

But when the charmed and beautiful Perseus arrives on the island, her lonely existence is blown apart, unleashing desire, love… and betrayal.

and another…. MEDUSA

Within the depths of the Underworld the formidable snake-haired Gorgon has finally had enough. Tired of being eternally and unjustly brandished a villain, Medusa has found the courage to face her tragic past and speak out.

Determined to expose the centuries of lies surrounding her name, Medusa gives unparalleled insight into her cursed life, from her earliest memories and abandonment at birth, right through to her tragic and untimely death at the hands of the hero Perseus.

Through telling her story, Medusa finally reveals the lost truth behind antiquity’s most infamous monster.

Medusa breathes new life into an ancient story and echoes the battle that women throughout millennia have continued to wage – the opportunity to simply be heard.

ARGO (BLADES OF BRONZE SERIES)

Iolkos, Greece, 1230 BC. King Pelias has grown paranoid, tormented by his murderous past and a prophecy of the man who will one day destroy him.

But Pelias is cunning as well as powerful. He gives Jason an impossible challenge: to claim the throne, he must first steal the fabled Golden Fleece of Colchis.

Jason assembles a band of Greece’s finest warriors. They are the Argonauts, named for their trusty ship. But even with these mighty allies, Jason will have to overcome the brutal challenges hurled his way.

His mission and many lives depend on his wits – and his sword.

    Hello to a fellow author,
Glad to see you champion books retelling Greek myths! It has been my focus as well in recent times, Ekaterini. My name is Sophia Kouidou-Giles and I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece but live in the Pacific Northwest. Having authored a couple of books based on Greek mythology, I just thought I would introduce myself to you.
An Unexpected Ally: A Greek Tale of Love, Revenge, and Redemption, was published in 2023; Circle of Peace: Perce’s Great Hall is forthcoming in March 2025. Readers encounter a string of familiar myths: Odysseus, Circe, Skylla, the House of Helios, Daedalus and Ikaros and more. I am working on a third to complete a trilogy in this cycle of Greek tales.

Here is my website for more: https://www.sophiakouidougiles.com I hope to hear more about your work.

    All best,
    Sophia
