The Top 10 Christmas Eve Movie List

The Top 10 Christmas Eve Movie List

Christmas is the perfect time for movies. I love snuggling up by the radiator (we don’t have a working fireplace), switching on the Christmas tree lights and catching up with a nice feel-good film.

When we were little, my sister and I used to draw up a list of movies (back then, on VHS) to watch while we waited to catch Santa in the act.

Usually we’d be fast asleep on the sofa by the time the third Disney film started rolling, and would be awoken by my mum excitedly babbling “Can you hear the sleighbells? I think Santa is on the roof!”

Ah, good times.

Anyway, it has now become a tradition to watch Christmassy or classic movies on Christmas Eve and in the weeks leading up to the festivities, so I have put together a list of Ten Christmas Eve Films for you to enjoy.

  1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: love it or hate, this epic franchise has a very Christmassy feel about it and should last you the entire Christmas period – Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day.
  2. Love Actually: if you are looking for a warm, feel-good rom-com, this should do nicely.
  3. The Santa Claus: Bernard the elf is strangely attractive.
  4. The Tailor of Gloucester: one of Beatrix Potter’s most heart-warming tales and the animation is beautiful.
  5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Jim Carey’s finest moment (aside from The Mask) – Green really suits him!
  6. A Christmas Carol: any version will do although my favourite is the 1982 animation.
  7. Santa Claus The Movie: I’m never really sure if I like this film or not but it holds many childhood memories so it has to go on the list!
  8. The Muppet Christmas Carol: The Muppets singing + Christmas = a real cracker!
  9. Meet me in St Louis: You can’t Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas without Judy Garland.
  10. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Tim Burton’s musical stop-motion animation is a dazzling mix of fun and fright with a unique take on the seasonal holidays.

And for those of you screaming “WHY is Home Alone NOT on the List?! I say this: Macaulay Culkin  annoys the bejeezers out of me and what kind of parent leaves their kid behind at Christmas???

Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS all and I’ll see you in January!!!

Our Christmas eve movie has been A Christmas Story with a comparable seasonal beverage and maybe a fire. My family doesn’t look so dysfunctional after a Christmas Story. Merry Christmas !

      To you too!

Your Christmas sounds very much like mine used to be. My brother and I would get the Radio Times or newspaper listings and plan ahead for the whole week over what films to record and then fight over who was allowed to own that recording 🙂

We only have radiators too but with them on hot, the lights on the christmas tree on, a full stomach and a table or sofa full of nibbles and a good movie then that’s all I can ask for!
